What to Serve at Thanksgiving 2020

Within the blink of an eye, we are now in November, and that means the holiday season has officially commenced!  We are finally down to the last two months of 2020, so it’s time to wind down and enjoy the ride.  This year has certainly been a different year, so why not spice it up a little bit during the holiday season?  During these next several weeks, we often know what is coming when it comes to food: green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, and that big roasted turkey on Thanksgiving.  But, not all of us want to go through the same traditions as in previous years.

With everything being so different this year, how about you change up the way you serve your feast this year at Thanksgiving?  Instead of serving a big main course, why not serve a large variety of small plates?  Always wanted a fancy charcuterie board?  Do it!  Sick of the same pumpkin pie?  Get creative and think of something you’ve never served for dessert at Thanksgiving — like a creamy crème brûlée or pumpkin mousse shooters.  There is nothing wrong with changing things up and putting a personal touch on this year’s holiday feasts.

From having an all-out feast with a large gathering to keeping it cozy with just the immediate family, Moceri Companies wants you to enjoy your holiday festivities this year by treating yourselves to delicious food and scrumptious treats with your own special touches.  If you are hosting Thanksgiving this year, take a look at some of our ideas to change things up!

Don’t Want to Roast a Turkey?  Change Up the Main Course

Of course, one of the staples of a full Thanksgiving dinner is the delicious turkey.  People have done away with a simple roast turkey and started deep-frying or smoking their turkey on Thanksgiving.  So, if you still love the tradition of cooking a turkey, maybe try changing up the way it’s served?  Since no one really says you need to roast a whole turkey, how about serving braised turkey drumsticks or a hearty turkey chili?  So, you could at least incorporate the traditional bird on Turkey Day, but it will save you from an all-day roast.

Though, some people prefer to go a whole other route altogether.  Maybe you have a special family recipe for lasagna that everyone in the family can’t resist?  You can pair it with a slow-cooked pot roast in a hearty tomato sauce and call that your main course.  Then there are plenty of other options totally suitable for a nice home-cooked meal: prime rib, pork loin, and oven-roasted chicken are savvy options instead of the turkey dinner.  Turkey might seem like the classic choice, but it certainly isn’t the only one to do!

All the Possibilities for Side Dishes

Some people simply can’t wait for Thanksgiving for one reason: the side dishes!  If you are one of those people, you might want to stick with the traditional sides — turkey stuffing, green bean casserole, and cranberry sauce, among other items.  But, if you opt to change up the main course, you might as well add some flare to the sides, too!

As there are plenty of traditional sides, you can still choose other fall-like items, like roasted acorn squash.  Instead of starches like potatoes, we also recommend a fresh risotto with tomato or mushroom.  Not crazy about cranberries?  Make a cherry-apple chutney with orange zest to still remain autumnal.  The choices are endless as you could even make the whole meal just out of the sides!

Well, the Most Important Part: Dessert!

If you make it to the dessert, you know that there are too many to choose from!  We can never forget the traditional picks, like an apple or pumpkin pie, among many others.  However, like your main course and side dishes, you can mix things up in the dessert, too!  Take advantage of those fall flavors again like spiced pumpkin, cinnamon, or even fig.  While pies are usually the go-to dessert for this time of year, choose two-to-three of your favorite fall flavors and make fresh batches of cookies or scones instead.  If you’re feeling really creative, put together ramekins with ingredients like layers of custard, candied pecans, fig preserves, and cinnamon.  If you have a favorite ingredient you’d like to use instead, maybe put out a variety for your guests to choose from.  Like other courses, desserts are just as fun to mix up for your holiday guests!
